Living in a city island like Singapore one does not get to see many farmer markets around. Recently though, I found out there is going to be a farmers market at the Singapore Expo and I knew I had to pay it a visit.
I stopped by the Fire Flies Health Farm stall and bought a few vegetables. The friendly stall owner gave me tips on how to cook certain local vegetables.
A few stalls down I came across ComCrop, a local urban farm which grows herbs in the middle of the city centre of Singapore. I bought a jar of their homemade basil pesto.
Being raised a city girl and a proud one at that I am amazed at what you can grow in smaller spaces when you put your mind to it. I do believe urban farms are the way of the future to reduce carbon footprint, grow local produce without pesticides, build a like minded community and be self sustainable to a certain degree.
Buying local has always appealed to me. Everyone has their thing, something that they are passionate about and this is my thing that I am passionate about, eating fresh organic produce grown locally. You get to know your farmer, you know where your food comes from and you know their farming methods and practices. Even if the produce may not be certified organic but your local farmer may grow their produce without any pesticides and chemical fertilisers plus buying local keeps the money in the community and the cost down for us consumers as well. As I like to say win win all around 🙂
Although farms are not the norm in Singapore given the land scarcity, I have done some research and found a few homegrown organic and urban farms that have been around for awhile now. If you want to eat good quality produce for better health at a lower cost and support your local farmer and their business then buy local.
These are some of the farms you can visit in Singapore and buy their locally grown produce as well.
