I make fresh green juice every week. It is full of anti inflammatory goodness and a powerhouse of micro nutrients. It is my weekly multivitamin.
After experimenting with both green smoothies and green juices, I decided for the sake of my body and gut a daily pressed fresh homemade juice is a better option. Why? Because it does not contain the serious amounts of fiber that mucked up my gut – read my green smoothie story here.
As most of you know by now I suffer from Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis an Autoimmune condition. Managing an incurable chronic illness holistically is an ongoing journey. Along the way I have come to find out that I also suffer from histamine intolerance, a condition exacerbated by my recent battle with Candida and that not all diets work for everyone. It is always wise to work with your own body and bio-individuality than follow someone else’s diet blindly.
Inflammation is the root cause of most illnesses. Thus, removing inflammatory and gut irritating foods, such as Dairy, Sugar and Gluten are key in any holistic approach towards addressing health issues. Introducing anti inflammatory, nutrient rich, whole foods into the diet will be the next step. Although, not all anti inflammatory whole foods are good for everyone. For example, bananas, tomatoes, strawberries, oranges and spinach are high in histamine. If you have a histamine intolerance issue which you don’t know about and start to eat these food on a regular basis you might start to feel more sick than before.
My version of the green mean juice does not have any high histamine foods or any fruits. Instead I sweeten the juice up with some carrots and this tends to take the bitterness of the greens down a notch. Removing fruits from the juicing reduces the sugar consumption from the juiced fruits. Sugar breeds inflammation so lesser the better.
I love drinking green juice this way, it feels fresh, clean and not overly sweet. I know it is full of green goodness and micronutrients that my body needs instead of the sugar my body doesn’t need.
Greens + No Fruits = The Ultimate Green Mean Juice!
A final note before you start juicing:
Do buy organic produce for juicing. You want to drink something that is going to be dense in nutrients but hopefully not dense in pesticides as well.
The Ultimate Green Mean Juice – Makes 4 glasses
- 750 grams of your choice of green leafy vegetable except spinach (I have used Chye Sim in this recipe)
- 1 kg of carrots
- a knob of ginger
- 30 grams of herb of your choice (I have used parsley in this recipe)
OK this is how you roll:
- Rinse the juicing ingredients and cut them into the size that would fit into your juicer feed. Especially wash the green leafy vegetables well, making sure there are no bugs or worms on them.
- Juice all the ingredients and enjoy your glass of fresh goodness!
